How to Pin a Zone to Floor Level in the Sidebar

Overview

As explained in What’s the Difference Between a Zone and a Room in Butlr?, the Dashboard automatically decides where each Zone appears in the left-hand navigation tree — nested under a Room, or listed directly under its Floor — based on the Zone's geometry.

This works well for small Zones that live inside a single Room. But some Zones are drawn to represent something bigger — a shared collaboration area, an open floor plan spanning several smaller rooms, or a zone that's simply larger than the room-level breakdown of the space. For these, the automatic placement can feel arbitrary, and isn't always where you'd expect to find it — it can even shift on its own if a nearby Room is later resized, without the Zone itself changing at all.

Show at floor level Zone Settings solves this. Turning it on for a Zone forces it to always appear as a direct child of its Floor in the sidebar — regardless of the automatic placement.

How to turn it on

1. Open Studio and select the Floor containing the Zone.
2. Turn on Edit mode, top right.
3. Click the Zone on the floor plan — or select it from the sidebar — to open its Zone Settings panel.
4. Find Show at floor level near the bottom of the panel, and turn it on.
5. Check the sidebar — the Zone should now be listed directly under its Floor.

To undo this, open the same Zone Settings panel and turn Show at floor level back off. The Zone will return to whatever automatic placement currently applies.

When to use it

• A Zone intentionally spans several Rooms or smaller Zones — for example, a shared collaboration area laid over multiple desks or rooms.
• A large or open-plan Zone that isn't meant to represent any single Room.
• A Zone that keeps moving between Rooms in the sidebar — whether from adjusting the Zone itself or resizing a nearby Room — and you'd rather it just stay in a predictable place.
