Doorline Adjustment Guide for Traffic Sensors

This guide explains how to correctly adjust and QA doorlines for Butlr Traffic Sensors to ensure accurate IN/OUT detection. Follow each step carefully and report any exceptions to Butlr technical support team.

General Principles

Use the Recommended Mounting Position

Always install the sensor only at positions marked as recommended in the [Heatic 1 & Heatic 2] Mounting Guide and [Heatic 2+] Mounting Guide.

Avoid the following:

  • Mounting too close or too high above the door.

  • Mounting too far or at an angle where the sensor cannot “see” people standing at the actual physical doorline.

If installation must occur in a non-recommended position (😑, 🙁, or ❌ icons), report it in a ticket to inform the Butlr team.

 

Setting the Doorline in Studio

  1. Turn on Heatmaps in Studio.

  2. Stand exactly at the real physical doorline.

  3. Use the heatmap to locate your heat signature and set the doorline at the true physical door position — not where the floorplan graphic suggests.

    In Studio, adjust the doorline slider so the virtual doorline aligns with the center of your heat signature.

  4. For open areas like stairs or hallways, position the doorline where it:

    Captures true entries/exits from turns or U-turns.

    Does not capture people simply passing by.

    Avoids being placed too far from stairs (weak heat signal).

⚠️ Acceptable range for doorline position: 0.15 - 0.85.

 

Trimming the Doorline

Trimming defines where your doorline starts and ends (points A and B). The goal is to make sure the doorline matches the actual area people pass through, not just what’s drawn on the floor plan. Always trim using the Heatmap view in Studio — never by eye on the plan.

 

Case 1. Doorway Without People Passing By (Normal Doorway)

When to use:

For a standard doorway that only leads between two spaces and doesn’t have people walking parallel to it (e.g., an office door or restroom door).

Steps:

  1. Turn on “Heatmaps” in Studio.

  2. Stand at the left and right end of the doorway (sensor installed side). Note the center of your heat signature on the heatmap.

  3. Set the doorline endpoints (A and B) to make it cover a little more than what the heat signatures show.

    This ensures the line covers the actual crossing band through the doorway.

  4. Verify that A and B fall within 0.15–0.85 of the frame range.

Doorline captures all true entries/exits while ignoring edge noise. No trimming bias is needed.

 

Case 2. Doorway Next to Hallway (People Passing by in a Different Direction)

When to use:

For doorways adjacent to hallways, open corners, or stairs — where people can walk parallel to the doorway without entering/exiting.

Steps:

  1. Turn on “Heatmaps.”

  2. Have someone stand at:

    The inner edge (room side). Note the center of the heat blob.

    The outer edge (hallway side). Note that heat blob’s center.

  3. Set the doorline endpoints (A and B) along the true doorway threshold, but trim the line so it only covers the turn-through area between the inner and outer edges — not the full wall width.

  4. Adjust trimming so that people walking parallel in the hallway do not cross the trimmed segment.

  5. Check that A/B stay in the 0.15–0.85 acceptable range.

  6. Verify detection with a 1-person test (entering and exiting twice) and confirm in Grafana.

Doorline only triggers when people turn through the doorway — no false counts from side traffic.

 

Examples

Room with Hallway Nearby

  • Position: Set the doorline at the real physical doorway.

  • Trimming: Adjust to prevent capturing hallway passersby.

  • Position: Place doorline where it does not capture people walking parallel to entry paths.

  • Ensure it captures actual turning entry/exits (e.g., U-turns).

  • Avoid weak signals by not placing too far from the stairs.

  • Trimming: Prevent capturing side passersby.

Double Sensors for Double Doorways

  • Position: Align doorlines precisely at each physical door.

  • Trimming: Adjust each to avoid overlap or missed crossings.

  • Ensure both doorlines reflect individual heatmap boundaries.
